Google+'s Much Needed Shot in the Arm

bloomfield knoble has been watching Google+ with a skeptical eye since its launch last summer. As we stated at the time, where do people have room in their lives for another social network? We still stand behind that statement. It’s not like Facebook is doing anything wrong. They’re not driving away the masses, making them clamor for another outlet on which to post their Farmville needs. In fact, Facebook just launched their most popular overhaul yet, the Timeline. So gaining a foothold has been hard for Google+.

You Better Be Interesting on the New Facebook

As Mashable points out, the new Facebook changes that were announced last week will eventually impact Pages as well as user profiles. As it stands now, businesses can post their message and count on that message appearing in people’s newsfeed who have “liked” them – whether it’s relevant to that user or not. That’s all well and good for businesses who post “nonsense” posts that even their followers probably don’t care about. (Think of the company that only posts about how great its product is. After you’ve heard it enough, it just becomes static.)

With the latest changes, the emphasis will be on interacting with the content and informing Facebook of individual tastes and interests. Over time, if your content isn’t compelling, it will be relegated exclusively to the Ticker – the sidebar that shows “less important” updates.

QR Codes – Practical Tool or Just More Static?

They’re starting to pop up everywhere – those little squares of black and white lines and blocks that look like static on your TV screen. Have you scanned one yet? If you haven’t, you’re in a shrinking group of smartphone users. It’s a QR (Quick-Response) Code, and they’re a quick (hence the name) way to drive consumers to your website, game, promotion, sign-up page or other mobile-oriented marketing campaign.

Scrub that Data

One of the hallmarks of the work we do for clients is our dedication to the data. We never fly blindly into a campaign and we’re never beholden to a particular medium. One of our mantras states that we are agnostic to the medium. We don’t choose what type of campaign we’re going to employ for any client until we’ve done our research.

Too often we have heard stories of agencies engaging with a client and leading them down a path to search engine marketing, direct mail or some other pre-determined format. This occurs because the agency has an expertise or formula they follow in a particular medium. This is not the most effective way to market (Dear Reader, Please make up your own metaphor and insert here).
